My old gas lawn mower died and I needed a replacement. I read the reviews of this item, and although I was skeptical, I went ahead and ordered it. I am very pleased with my purchase.
Target shipped the item quickly and it was in my hot little hands in less than a week's time. My item came with a serious flaw from the manufacturer - the bolt that was supposed to be attached to the power cord was completely missing. I found a bolt around the house that kind of works as a short term solution - I'll get a better bolt soon. Aside from the missing bolt, the item was fine.
Assembly was reasonable. You don't need any tools, but a bit of upper body strength is nice. The handles are tricky to atttach to the body (the written instructions aren't helpful). If you lie on the floor and look into the holes, you can see the bolts to which the handle attaches. I found the handle to be easier to attach once I saw where the bolts actually were inside the unit. (Note: you cannot adjust the angle of the handles where they attach to the deck. The handles don't adjust much.) I found the shroud hole covers to be difficult to attach. Neither the written instructions nor the diagram was helpful. In my opinion, the shroud hole covers are poorly designed. I think mine are attached incorrectly, but this hasn't caused a problem with using the mower.
I live in a hilly area with a completely awful yard - the lawn is more weeds than grass and is sharply sloped with numerous tree roots, tree stumps and debris (sticks and rocks). This is probably a worse case scenario for mowing - I have seen very few yards worse than mine. I found this mower to be magnificent (seriously, I wanted to kiss it after I had finished the lawn). The mower started right away with no problems and was very light and easy to maneuver. It was quiet (for a lawn mower). I could go up and down the hills without a struggle (I struggled a lot with my old mower which was very heavy). There was no emission as you would have from a gas engine. In my opinion, the deck did a better job keeping debris from flying up as I mowed - I think this mower is much, much safer to operate on a difficult yard.
The only issues with mowing was managing the cord as I mowed. I think I will get better with practice. So far, no mishaps. I have a 100' cord and I could reach the entire yard. The handle seems a bit flimsy and I have conerns about its long term durability, but it operates well for now.
I think this is a great mower for women or responsible teens or anyone who is reluctant about mowing a yard.

I replaced a 9 year old Black & Decker cordless electric mower with this mower. The new one is much lighter and the cord doesn't seem to be as much of a problem as I thought it might be. In exchange, I got a much lighter mower which is a pleasure to push and the power seems to be on par with the bigger cordless mower I had before. I thought about getting the mulching mower but found that if I blocked the spot where the grass comes out, it mulches just fine. Save the additional $30 and use a piece of the cardboard box and voila, a great mulching mower. One potential problem is the handle to make the engine start running. It is very flexible and I hope it doesn't break while pushing and pulling on the handle while mowing. This is my second electric mower and believe me, I am very happy not having to worry about buying gas, changing the oil and storing it with all the gas and oil smell.

As the other reviewers state, the mower is very light weigh, easy AND fun to use! I can knock out my t'house lawn in 20-25 min and never have to add gas, get a tune up or any of that stuff.
I love it!! I just wish it was cordless...

Previously returned item

I'm very happy with my B&D lawnmower, but I had to have a friend repair it before I could use it. Clearly this was a previously returned item, as there were scratches on the deck of the mower where someone had tried to fix it and gave up. The blade was impossible to move. It was stuck and took strong, strong physical force to move it back to an operable position. I could never have done it on my own, and obviously neither could the previous "owner."
This is more a reflection on Target than on B & D.
I found no place on the [............]site for my account to contact Target, but I'll think seriously before I order from them again.
As for the repaired mower, it works wonderfully now that the mower blade is functional. When I need a new one I'll order the same again, but not through Target.

I purchased this mower a couple of weeks ago and so far it is great. It beats using stinky gas. It is very lightweight and easy to use. I don't really mind the power cord. I hope to have many happy years with this lawn mower. My last gas mower lasted me 5 years. I hope this one lasts that long. It is not like using a lawn mower at all, it is like vacuuming the lawn.

The item is great for small yards. It's easy to use and has several different height settings when cutting grass. I also like that I don't have to play around with gas.

Go to the Black and Decker website and search for "shroud hole covers" there is a better picture than in the owner's manual.
